Velvet is made form various fabrics but ideally from silk. Cotton is also used where the texture of fabric changes, since it slightly reduces lavishness of fabric.

Velvet is considered as one of the luxurious fabric and very expensive together with silk. More recently, synthetic velvets have been developed, mostly polyester, viscose, acetate and mixtures of different synthetics, or synthetics and natural fibres (e.g. viscose and silk). Velvet is difficult to clean, but now- a -days the dry cleaning has made the work easier. The most beautiful weaves, such as brocades, are still done by hand. India has produced velvet from remote times, often richly embroidered, for the furniture and trappings of royalty.

Velvet is mostly used for dressy garments, bathrobes, drapery and bedspreads and it is also used most in decorative purpose.
